Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing before you start your map.

Is been free to use?

Yes. been is free to mark every country you've visited, build your travel passport, and share your map. Premium is an optional one-time purchase that unlocks region tracking, the 3D globe view, an unlimited travel wishlist, private notes, and an ad-free map.

How many countries can I track?

been covers 250+ countries and territories — including all 193 UN member states — so you can mark everywhere you've been, from large nations to tiny island territories.

Can I track states, provinces and regions?

Yes, with Premium. been tracks subdivisions in 50+ countries and counting — US states, Canadian provinces, German states, Australian states, Spanish autonomous communities, Japanese prefectures, Indian states and more — over 1,000 regions in total.

Does been work offline?

Yes. The entire world map is bundled inside the app, so you can mark trips and browse your map with no signal — on a plane or off the grid, anywhere on earth.

How does been count countries and handle borders?

been uses de-facto borders — it maps the world by who actually controls each territory today — and stays neutral, drawing disputed and partially-recognised states with a distinct border and a factual label rather than taking a side.

Are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland counted separately?

Counting England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as four separate countries is a Premium feature — on the free tier been tracks them together as the United Kingdom. With Premium, each becomes its own country with its own flag, while the UK still counts once toward your UN member states.

Does been sync across iPhone and Android?

Yes. Sign in with Apple or Google and your visited map is backed up to your account and kept in sync across all your devices — switch phones or platforms without losing your progress.

Is my travel data private?

Yes. Your map is tied to your own account and is never sold. You can read exactly what is stored in the privacy policy, and delete your account and data at any time.

How is the percentage of the world calculated?

Your passport shows the countries, continents, UN members and regions you've visited as a share of the total you can collect, so your percentage only reaches 100% once you've truly been everywhere.

How is been different from a paper scratch map?

been is a living scratch map for your pocket: tap to mark a country and watch it fill in, drill down to individual regions, track your stats automatically, and share a beautiful map card — no wall space required.
